Inktober 2022

Every year, during the month of October, an art challenge pops up on Instagram, and that challenge is called #Inktober! As an illustrator, I always wondered whether I could do it because the task required was for me to draw an image a day during the month! It might sound like a  challenge that involves ink, but artists are open to using any medium to execute the work. Due to the huge commitment, I was always reluctant to participate. However, something felt different this year, and I was determined to try it!

Out of all the lists I found on the platform, I decided to participate in Jomo Goodlife’s prompt list. Something about his list convinced me to try on this challenge, as it is simple yet meaningful if I think deeper about each word. The best part is he also provided days to take breaks which were very helpful for me to pause and reflect during the process.

To make the challenge more manageable, I focused less on the details and more on the message and concept of the artwork. The colours chosen are also very minimal, and I repeat them to make the whole series more coherent.

This was also an opportunity to let loose from my usual style and experiment more with different compositions, abstract shapes and colour combinations. Although I thought the whole process would be hard and rigorous, it was rather light-hearted, and I enjoy the random topics I get each day!

In the end, I managed to create a tiny desk calender from it as well as a zine which contains all the drawings.
